Our community boasts a vibrant group of startups, each with a unique journey and story. The Startup Spotlight series introduces their ventures, exploring their inspirations, challenges, and successes. In this edition, we feature OTTER, a Swiss startup providing the market with an innovative alternative to combine physical activity with sea exploration.
What's your story? How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I wanted to combine my passion for the waters with my know-how in electric drivetrains. I realized there was no well-designed solution for electrically assisted cycling on water, so I decided to create one. That’s how OTTER was born—a simple idea to fill a gap in the market and let people explore in a new way.
Why does the industry need the solution you're providing?
On the micro-level: Because it’s just plain fun!On the bigger scale: The Otter Bike combines the best of two worlds: With electric assistance, you get the exploration range of a small boat, but you’re also active along the way.
It’s good for the planet, cutting out emissions, and good for your health, adding a touch of exercise to your adventures.
What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?
The freedom of being my own boss—whether that means working from anywhere or setting my own priorities. I’ve also loved the diversity of topics I get to dive into every day and the incredible learning experience it’s been.
What challenges did you have to overcome at the beginning?
Figuring out the right product for the market and finding the ideal partners to make it happen.
Any advice for entrepreneurs just starting out in this space?
Just start. Take the first step and keep pushing—you’ll figure it out as you go. Eventually, it all starts to make sense.
What’s next for your business? Where do you see it in 3-5 years?
Next up is kicking off our international expansion at BOOT in January. In 3-5 years, we aim for OTTER to be the leader in electrically assisted cycling on water.
And a fun one - what's a quote or some words that you live by?
Carpe Diem.
