Startup Spotlight: Sailproof

Our Startup Spotlight series introduces you to our community of innovators, highlighting their unique journeys. This week, we put the spotlight on SailProof, the company building waterproof electronic devices dedicated to marine navigation.

How did you come up with the idea for the business?

The idea for SailProof came from a personal need. As avid sailors ourselves, we found that existing technology couldn’t answer our needs. We wanted durable, reliable tech that could handle the elements and keep us connected and safe for a reasonable budget.

Why does the industry need the solution you're providing?

The marine industry has its own set of challenges that regular tech solutions just can't handle. That's why our products are built specifically for marine conditions, giving sailors reliable, tough technology they can trust. This means better safety, smoother navigation, and an all-around better sailing experience. In the end, we want sailors to be able to forget about the tech and just enjoy being out on the water.

What sets your products apart from others in the market?

Our products are made specifically for the marine environment. Unlike generic tech, SailProof tablets are rugged enough to handle extreme weather, waterproof against saltwater, sunlight readable and reliable in rough conditions. This means you can trust them to perform well and give you peace of mind throughout your journey. But it’s not just about durability. At SailProof, we’re passionate about making sailing accessible to everyone. We promote inclusivity across genders, ages, and skill levels, ensuring our technology fits various sailing needs—from regattas to leisurely sails.

What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?

Starting SailProof has been super rewarding. The best part is seeing our vision come to life and getting positive feedback from the sailing community. It's amazing to know our products make a real difference for sailors worldwide. Sure, starting from scratch in the middle of the COVID crisis was tough, but being around other entrepreneurs who care about more than just sales or numbers and who share our core values has made it all worth it.

What challenges did you have to overcome at the beginning of your journey?

One of the main challenges was developing tech that could really handle the tough marine environment. We went through lots of versions and rigorous testing to make sure our products are super durable and high-performing. This took a lot of time, patience, and a commitment to excellence. Plus, maintaining a high standard of customer service during this process was challenging but essential. We believe that delivering exceptional service is just as important as the quality of our products.

Any bits of advice for entrepreneurs getting started in this space?

My advice would be to really understand what your market needs. Spend time with your potential customers, get to know their challenges, and develop solutions that fit those needs. Also, be ready for setbacks and see them as chances to learn. Persistence and adaptability are crucial.  Additionally, build a strong network and don't be afraid to ask for help or advice. Surround yourself with people who share your vision and values. It's also important to stay passionate about your work – that passion will keep you going through the tough times and make the successes even sweeter.

What's the plan for the future of the business? Where do you see the company in 3-5 years?

Over the next 3-5 years, we're excited to expand our product lineup and add cool new features. We’re also aiming to boost our presence in international markets. Our big goal is to become the top choice for marine rugged tablets, making sailing technology accessible and more efficient for everyone.

And finally, a more personal question, what are some words or a quote that you live by?

Definitely this quote attributed to Confucius: “We have two lives, and the second begins when we realise we only have one”. I always try to remember it, even in the development of my company and within my team.
