Our Startup Spotlight series introduces you to our community of innovators, highlighting their unique journeys. This week, we put the spotlight on Superyacht Fitness, a startup on a mission to transform how we approach health and wellness in the marine industry.
How did you come up with the idea for the business?
Many friends in the industry had discussed the challenges of life onboard a Superyacht and the impact it can have on Mental Health. Given Tim’s experience in the health & fitness world and the fact he is very much seen as the ‘go-to’ guy for HNWI and professional athletes, we decided to broaden our proposition beyond incredible gyms/equipment and make a tangible difference to yacht crew by focusing on their wellbeing.
Tell us about your product - what it is, what it aims to achieve.
Superyacht Fitness is built up of 4 quadrants all underpinned by our proprietary team of CEO’s (Chief Energy Officers). We focus on the following; World Class gym design & Equipment, crew wellness (incorporating the Superyacht Fitness App), building a ‘connected’ and ‘gamified’ community using 'Myzone' wearable. technology, providing continuous development and learning opportunities for the crew through our SYF Academy.
This is all supported by a dedicated CEO, that supports your vessel (much like a remote crew member), to inspire and build a great team. All of this aims to support crew with mental health, better retention rates, a more enjoyable experience & ultimately grater satisfaction for owners and guests!
What is your favourite thing about being a founder?
The fact that we can REALLY make difference and that we can pivot the business accordingly. We both have a client-first culture which is important for us.
What challenges did you have to overcome at the beginning of your journey?
Ambiguity about what we were going to be delivering, whereby other companies (perhaps competitors) made a pre-judgement. Sourcing unbelievable partners, when you are both very picky was also tricky!
Which founders or businesses are the most inspirational to you?
Gymshark. We love what Ben has done here! Its about taking an initiative, listening to feedback and building something meaningful.
WhatsApp – Jan Koum – he has identified a ‘need’ and has made this a part of day-to-day life. If you can make things a habit, it makes business much easier.
Any bits of advice for entrepreneurs getting started in this space?
Loads of advice, but the main things I’d focus on are; solve a problem – don’t just sell something, it’s a much easier way to sell.
Make yourself equal, then make yourself different – don’t be afraid to ask for help – its not a sign of weakness.
Employ people better than yourself – don’t employ someone and tell them what to do. Let them tell you what WE need to do!
Be passionate and have empathy – people buy from people (and the converse!)
What's the plan for the future of the business? Where do you see the company in 3-5 years?
We have a pledge to improve 5000 lives by 2026 – we have a myopic focus on this! Innovation will lead our direction, we want to change the way wellness facilities/ gyms are designed and bring them into the 2020’s!
And finally, a more personal question, what are some words or a quote that you live by?
We have two non-negotiables at SYF – INTEGRITY AND FUN! Whatever we do, we must enjoy it, otherwise we’ll stop!
