Startup Spotlight: Sovereign Ships

This week, we put the spotlight on Ben Woodason, founder of Sovereign Ships, who designs self-sufficient, solar-powered yachts with electric propulsion and integrated gardens for sustainable ocean living.

What’s your story? How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Driven by concerns over global instability and inspired by a love for space-related science fiction, Sovereign Ships was founded with a visionary mission to maximise personal freedom by offering self-sufficient, ocean-going homes in the form of modern-day spaceships.

Why does the industry need the solution you’re providing?

Our solar-electric yachts, equipped with interior gardens, combine rugged self-sufficiency, technology, and comfort. Our focus on individuals seeking independence, sustainability, and adventure aligns with prevailing macro trends such as remote work, healthy/green living, and a desire for real human experiences (counter to the wave of AI).

What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?

Living every day with a mission of creating the future we wanna live in, where individuals can be truly free while exploring, experiencing, and respecting nature.

What challenges did you have to overcome at the beginning?

There are always challenges to overcome in any business. Adoption is one of our key issues because we offer a fairly radical lifestyle change. The more we promote/demonstrate, the more supporters sign on. It’s just a matter of staying focused and continuing to build momentum.

What’s next for your business? Where do you see it in 3-5 years?

Continuing to grow the business and expanding to a full lineup of entry-level yachts. We want to see a School of Sovereign Ships!

Any advice for entrepreneurs just starting out in this space?

Try not to get overwhelmed. Solve one challenge at a time to the best of your ability so that you can check it off the list and avoid having to redo anything.

And a fun one—what’s a quote or some words that you live by?

“There is hope for the future. When the world is ready for a new and better life, all this will someday come to pass… in God’s good time.”
