The superyacht industry is known for its innovation and luxury but it’s the playful side of yachting that continues to captivate many. People owning and chartering superyachts are now on average ten to fifteen years younger than they were twenty years ago, in part due to a rise in the success of technology startups and the creation of new wealth.

Unsurprisingly then, the rising demographic of millennial millionaires are creating a surge in demand for toys to keep them entertained when aboard, and the available toys on a charter yacht are often the make or break factor, influencing their choice of yacht and charter company. This article will highlight six startups that are helping redefine how we have fun on the water. 

Off the Deck

Co-founded by brothers Alex and Ashley Hare and good friend Alan Shubotham, Off the Deck have created a portable golf entertainment system designed for playing off the transom or foredeck of yachts, as well as at beachfront homes. The system requires no installation and can be set up within ten minutes, transforming various open spaces into golf areas. 

The SeaDriveCX includes a high-speed touch screen for visibility and a cooling system for sunny summer days. Manufacturing operations are based in Silverstone, home of British F1 and motorsport, where Off the Deck have partnered with skilled F1 engineers whilst utilising industry leading facilities.

Otter

Otter is a Swiss startup focused on revolutionising outdoor exploration with its electrically assisted bicycles designed for use on the water. The sea-going bike takes just three minutes to set up and offers an innovative way to glide across the water with minimal effort. The design offers a silent, eco-friendly alternative to a traditional motorised watercraft and ensures that both beginners and experienced riders can enjoy their time on the water. 

Founded by Gian Zimmermann, Otter has a strong commitment to innovation and preserving the environment, all whilst providing a unique way to connect with nature. 

The Hydroflyer

Hydroflyer is a leading developer of advanced hydrofoiling boards aiming to combine the sensation of hoverboarding, jet-skiing and snowboarding into an eco-friendly, silent alternative to the traditional watercraft. The boards are powered by a lithium-ion setup that provide the user with up to 120 minutes of riding time reaching speeds of up to 45km/h. 

Based in Vancouver, The Hydroflyer boards feature modular designs, customisable options and patented technology catering to both beginners and seasoned riders. 

Level Hydrofoils

Level Hydrofoils have created the world’s first gyro-stabilised e-foil which uses a unique single mast design to provide a smooth and intuitive riding experience on the water. The boards use a unique FLY-BY-WIRE control system that enables riders to steer and control speed using only their body weight and positioning. The user experience is customisable via the Level App, allowing riders to adjust flight characteristics. 

Level also offers a variety of programs including private ownership and rental/excursion plans for businesses, making the e-foiling boards suitable for personal and commercial applications.

ENAUTIC

ENAUTIC is an Australian technology startup specialising in the development of electric hydrofoil propulsion systems. Their flagship product is the WaveFlyer VOLARÉ, a fully electric, flight-controlled foiling watercraft. They bring to the market a two seater vessel combining advanced design with high performance. The VOLARÉ is capable of reaching speeds of up to 20 knots, a range of 100km and rapid recharging capabilities, allowing for full day use. 

The technology developed by the ENAUTIC team incorporates aerospace inspired features for maximum maneuverability and stability in various conditions, such as crosswinds or imbalances. The crafts also feature retractable foils allowing the user to explore shallow waters and easily store the VOLARÉ onboard. 

JetCycle

The JetCycle Max is a human-powered foiled boat designed to deliver an innovative water flying experience solely using pedal power. The unique crafts are equipped with a patented propulsion system, 100% mechanical transmission, and custom designed foils, making it the only pedal-powered offering on the market to let users glide above the water. 

The E-JetCycle takes this experience further by introducing electric assistance to the rider, making it more accessible to a broader audience. With up to 3 hours of battery assisted ride-time, the crafts are ideal for silently exploring lakes, lagoons, and seas.
