Mediterranean Algae launches POSINODE to bring real-time environmental intelligence to ports and marinas

The first operational node has been installed at The Ocean Race’s global headquarters in Alicante, marking the start of a contracted deployment across more than 30 ports and marinas in Spain.

The first POSINODE node is now collecting real-time water quality data from an active port environment at Muelle 10 in Alicante.

Developed by Mediterranean Algae, the system connects in-water telemetry with a digital platform that turns local environmental readings into operational intelligence.

POSINODE monitors physicochemical parameters, nutrients and pollutants, helping ports, marinas and coastal industries understand local water conditions, detect deviations and anticipate environmental risks.

Each installation provides operators with their own data, supporting more preventive and precise environmental management.

For marinas and yachting destinations, this type of intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant as the sector faces growing pressure to improve sustainability standards, protect coastal ecosystems and align daily operations with water quality frameworks such as the Water Framework Directive.

The Alicante installation is the first step in a contracted deployment across more than 30 ports and marinas in Spain, before expanding internationally across the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and other regions.

“The ocean absorbs around 30% of the CO we emit, and we urgently need technologies that allow us to monitor its condition in real time. Our climate infrastructure supports coastal industries by helping them optimise their environmental management and contribute to a sustainable blue economy,” said Yago Sierras, CEO of Mediterranean Algae.

The Ocean Race has joined the first deployment as an early adopter, integrating POSINODE into its port environment as part of its commitment to ocean innovation and marine sustainability.

The Port Authority of Alicante enabled the installation by facilitating the operational coordination and permits required to operate the system in an active port environment.

“We cannot protect what we cannot measure. That is why it is important to use technology that provides information and data to assess how these phenomena are being driven by climate change and human activity,” said Estefanía Esteve, CFO of The Ocean Race.

The launch was presented during the Steering Committee meeting of the WestMED Initiative, held in Alicante on 9 June under the co-presidency of Spain and Tunisia.

The meeting brought together national blue economy representatives from ten Western Mediterranean countries — Portugal, France, Italy, Malta, Spain, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania — reflecting the increasing interest of international authorities in smart technologies that support measurable, data-driven sustainability across the blue economy.

For ports, marinas and yachting hubs, POSINODE brings sustainability closer to daily operations.

By turning real-time water quality data into environmental intelligence, the technology gives coastal operators a practical tool to monitor local conditions, anticipate risks and make better decisions for the marine environments they depend on.
